The energy drink market has pivoted into a wellness-focused "lifestyle platform" that is officially displacing traditional coffee as the daily ritual for Gen Z and female consumers.
Nowadays when you walk into a gym, it’s a safe bet to assume over 50% of the gym goers will be drinking some type of energy drink. The energy drink market has completely exploded in recent years, evolving from a niche segment for blue-collar workers and extreme athletes into a lifestyle staple. The expansion has been largely fueled by a divergence from sugary legacy brands toward better-for-you beverages and more approachable branding. Leading the charge is Celsius, which has redefined the category by marketing “clean, healthy energy” centered on fitness and active lifestyles rather than just raw stimulation. Celsius’s strategy worked, with annual revenue exploding from $130.7M in 2020 to $2.5B in 2025. They also identified a white space in the market and leaned into gender neutral and even feminine branding to appeal to a broader audience. Gen Z and Millennials are helping drive this surge with roughly 75-80% of the cohort drinking energy drinks regularly, with about 1 in 4 consuming them at least weekly.
The current energy landscape is increasingly female-centric and digital-first, as brands like Alani Nu and Bloom Nutrition leverage influencer culture to build massive communities. Alani Nu has successfully captured the 18-35 female demographic through bold pastel aesthetics and high-profile partnerships, most notably the “Kimade” collaboration with Kim Kardashian and the exclusive Addison Rae flavor. Celsius bought Alani Nu in 2025 for a whooping $1.8B and Alani has continued to perform, accounting for a majority of their parent company’s growth this past year. These companies have shifted their products from commodities to aspirational lifestyle choices, leaning into the “cool-girl” aesthetic of being seen drinking their vibrant cans. Similarly, Bloom Nutrition has disrupted the retail model by dominating social commerce. The brand recently generated 98.7% of its TikTok Shop revenue through a massive network of over 7,000 affiliates. Bloom’s recent $90M funding round at an over $600M valuation underscores the intense investor appetite for brands that bridge the gap between gym supplements and everyday beverages. The energy drink market has completely changed the game in beverage and underscores the power of digital marketing, social media, and branding for your customer.
