Week 21 Roundup
The benefits of fatty acids, a recipe for healthier pizza nights, and Chobani reaching $20B as it continues to dominate the dairy aisle.
Obsessed with Omegas
Omega fatty acids are a type of “healthy fat” that your body needs to function properly but cannot produce entirely on its own, making them an essential part of your diet. These powerful nutrients are vital for building cell membranes and play a crucial role in heart, brain, and eye health. They help manage triglycerides, lower blood pressure, and reduce inflammation throughout the body. There are three main types: Omega-3s (like ALA, EPA, and DHA), which are essential and must be consumed; Omega-6s, which are also essential; and Omega-9s, which are considered non-essential because your body can make them. The key is getting a healthy balance of all three for optimal well-being.
To boost your intake, you can find different omegas in various foods. Omega-3s are famously found in fatty fish like salmon and mackerel (providing EPA and DHA) and in plant sources like flaxseed, walnuts, and chia seeds (providing ALA). Omega-6s are common in vegetable oils, sunflower seeds, and peanut butter, while Omega-9s are plentiful in olive oil, avocados, and almonds. For those who don’t get enough from their diet, fish oil supplements are a popular and effective option. Brands like Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega, Thorne Super EPA, and Fatty15 are frequently cited as top picks for their quality, purity, and high concentration of EPA and DHA. Cod liver oil is another beneficial supplement that provides Omega-3s along with vitamins A and D.
Recipe of the Week
Protein Personal Pizzas
1 cup 0% greek yogurt
3/4 cup bread flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp garlic powder
½ tsp salt
1 cup low-fat shredded mozzarella
1 cup arugula
½ cup pizza sauce
½ cup turkey pepperoni
2 tsp balsamic drizzle
Combine Greek yogurt with bread flour, baking powder, garlic powder, and salt. Combine until a dough forms, using your hands if needed. Roll out into two personal sized pizzas on lightly oiled parchment paper. Top with pizza sauce, cheese, and your favorite toppings (I did turkey pepperoni, arugula, and balsamic glaze). Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the crust is slightly golden.
