Week 8 Roundup
The miracle supplement, easy high protein breakfast idea, and a big announcement from a beverage giant.
Magnesium: The Super Supplement
Magnesium is a vital mineral that plays a key role in numerous bodily functions, making it an essential part of maintaining overall health. One of its most notable benefits is its ability to support better sleep. Magnesium helps regulate the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for sleep-wake cycles, and promotes relaxation by calming the nervous system. This makes it particularly beneficial for individuals struggling with insomnia or stress-induced sleep disturbances. Additionally, magnesium aids in reducing muscle tension, which can further enhance sleep quality by preventing nighttime cramps or restlessness. By incorporating magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, and seeds, or through supplementation of magnesium glycinate, many people report deeper, more restorative sleep. Magnesium chloride is also a great option for muscle recovery and soreness relief.
Beyond sleep, magnesium is also a powerful ally in digestive health. It acts as a natural laxative by relaxing the muscles in the intestinal walls and drawing water into the colon, which can help relieve constipation. This makes it a gentle, non-habit-forming solution for those experiencing irregular bowel movements. Moreover, magnesium supports enzyme activity and nutrient absorption, which are critical for a healthy digestive system. Its anti-inflammatory properties can also soothe digestive discomfort, particularly in individuals with conditions like IBS. Magnesium citrate, one of the cheapest forms of magnesium, as well as magnesium oxide are shown to work well for gut health, specifically constipation. Beyond sleep and digestive health, magnesium supplementation is shown to improve cardiovascular and nerve health as well as calcium and blood sugar levels.
Recipe of the Week
Vanilla Protein Chia Pudding
½ cup of vanilla greek yogurt (I used Chobani 20g Protein Vanilla)
2 tbsp of chia seeds
½ cup of milk (I used Califia Farms Organic Vanilla Almond Milk)
1 tsp of vanilla
Mix yogurt, chia seeds, milk, and vanilla together in a mason jar and let set in the fridge overnight. I usually mix it after about an hour to make sure the chia seeds are incorporated thoroughly.
Top with your favorite fruit, nut butter, and cinnamon. I will meal prep this recipe by multiplying everything by 4 at the beginning of the week to have a high protein, high fiber breakfast ready to go.
